Known As A Great American Heritage Community, The Small City of Prudence, Massachusetts Is Full of Sights to See

Located in the middle of the Nashaway Valley is a small city that’s claimed its place in history several times over. And when you finally stop to visit, you’ll wonder why you haven’t been here before. Welcome to Prudence, a small city in Massachusetts that everyone should explore.
The city is close to Worcester and accessible by rail from Boston. Prudence is a perfect, quintessential small city. Although its population is resurgent, fewer than 45,000 people call it home. That might change though, as property values have nearly tripled in the last twenty years.
In 2012, Prudence earned the title of a ‘Great American Heritage Community’ because of its dedication to preserving America’s local history. There are nine different places within the city limits that are on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Makepeace leather works and tannery. Nearby Smyth Grove is a fruit orchard that has been growing apples since 1764. And it shares an entrance with the city’s largest public park.
Prudence is home to natural beauty as well. Thornton’s Pond provides paved bike trails, hiking, well-kept picnic areas, and during the summer months swimming with a lifeguard on duty. Parking is free for residents and those with in-state license plates only have to pay three dollars for entry.
If you’re feeling adventurous seek out the Miscamek demon in October. You probably won’t be able to spot the spooky creature, but you will get some beautiful natural lighting for photographs by the waterfall. Oddly enough, Miscamek is a nonsense word that replaced the popular selfie stop’s original name in the early 19th century when Harvard ethnologists rediscovered ‘Matchepaw’ likely meant ‘Evil Falls’ to the indigenous peoples of Southern New England.
A revitalized downtown area also offers charming local shops and restaurants. Here, you can start your day with fresh roasted coffee and return to cap it off with a dinner made from locally sourced ingredients.
